The Idaho Department of Commerce has hired Lane Packwood as administrator for its Economic Development Division.

Packwood has been a full-time officer in the Army National Guard and U.S. Army since 1993. He served in numerous positions, including commanding a field artillery battery in the 116th Brigade Combat Team during Operation Iraqi Freedom.  He also worked as a research analyst on Capitol Hill.

“Lane comes to us with a wealth of experience, including years of experience in leading organizations with more than 300 personnel through difficult challenges and major transformations,” Don Dietrich, director of the Idaho Department of Commerce, said in a release. Dietrich held the post previously.

“I’m looking forward to helping our local and regional partners start, expand and retain high-wage businesses in their communities,” Packwood said.  “We will continue to recruit new businesses from domestic and international sources, and build local development capacities through education, networking and infrastructure improvements.”

Packwood received a bachelor of Arts degree from Brigham Young University-Provo, and earned a master's degree in political science from UCLA and a master's degree in national security and strategic studies from the U.S. Naval War College.

Currently he is an adjunct professor at Boise State University and is considering his third master’s degree, the Department of Commerce said. He and his wife, Katie, have three children.
