The new owners of McCall’s Whitetail Club and Resort today announced their intent to restore the resort back to its former character, symbolized by a name change.

Shore Lodge, as it will once again be known, was a gathering spot for locals and tourists between 1948 and 1989, until San Diego developer Doug Manchester purchased the property. At that point the resort became upscale and private, though in recent years hotel rooms have been open to the public.

“The name change is a symbolic change to reposition the hotel to what we think it’s better suited as, and that is a landmark McCall destination,” said Mike Hormaechea of Boise-based RMH Company, one of the new owners. “We hope it will evoke memories from before it changed to Whitetail and make it a very welcome, iconic McCall place to visit.”

The new incarnation of Shore Lodge has lower rates (beginning at $99 a night) to encourage greater accessibility. Owners expressed hope that the changing resort will help drive interest in McCall, bringing more business to hotels, shops, restaurants and ski areas, an optimism shared by area real estate agents.

The golf course will remain private, and the new owners are studying the possibility of renaming the golf course and resort real estate. The resort was purchased in late August by RMH Company, Alscott Real Estate of Boise and Sabala Whitetail LLC of the McCall area.

  1. Compared to the larger scheme of things...Dow at 9500 points. Who cares! Call it what you like...may be another 2 years before the $99 is attractive.

    Call me a sour puss...

  2. Since this isn't a story about the Dow, I'm glad to see the name change. McCall was on it's way to becoming another Sun Valley and this change reflects McCall's identity as being an area for the common man, not an upscale elite area.

I loved Shore Lodge and will once again visit the hotel (other rooms up there are $79-$99 a night) and stay on the lake.

  3. I'm glad to see it go back. It never was the right thing to do to turn that into some place us common folk (whose stocks are indeed in the toilet) couldn't afford to go.

  4. I think this is a great move and will make a lot of people (Idahoans and those familiar w/ Old McCall) very happy!

Except maybe sour puss. . .

  5. I think it's great. Local ownership with an outstanding track record bringing an icon back to all of us. The west end of town needs a shot in the arm and this will help to kick start it.
