A co-op grocery is planned in the former McFadden Market building at Second Street and Broadway Avenue in downtown Meridian.
Architect Ward Schwider and business partner John McCarthy lead an effort to restore and expand the “once-beautiful” brick building that “gradually fell into disrepair,” the City of Meridian’s quarterly newsletter said. The building also once housed Meridian Exchange Bank.
Schwider and McCarthy aim to open the market by Christmas, the newsletter said. They seek charter members of the co-op, as well as people with business expertise, ideas and talents to share. They have lined up some suppliers of locally produced foods.
Lightyear Development President Mike McCabe, who plans to build the three-story Hub commercial building across the street, said in an interview that the co-op would be “good for The Hub and good for Meridian.”
He said Lightyear, the City of Meridian and the Meridian Development Corp. urban-renewal agency are working with the Ada County Highway District to make pedestrian-friendly upgrades to Second Street, including installing wider sidewalks and adding benches and other amenities.
