Publisher Rick Carpenter is in Sun Valley covering the Boise Metro Chamber’s Leadership Conference. This is the first of a series of items from Sun Valley.

Quality of life ranks as the top reason business owners are likely to continue or expand operations in the Treasure Valley.

During a noon presentation to business leaders attending the Boise Metro Chamber’s Leadership Conference in Sun Valley Monday, Boise State University researcher released a study conducted by marketing professor Trina Sego.

The positives also listed the opportunity for growth, a strong local economy, strong work ethic and access to decision makers as the top reason they want to stay in the valley.

It didn’t go unnoticed that the negatives that would limit growth closely corresponds with the actions the Chamber executives have decided to focus on.

The top three negatives were conditions of the local road system, condition of the interstate highway system and condition of the public transportation system.

Two of the top seven reasons included skill level of the workforce and access to a local community college.

The three areas outlined as focal points of discussion during the two-day conference are education and infrastructure, which included transportation.

After a day of presentations, each participant will divide into two of three issue areas to try to come up with viable solutions to the problems which were well documented. The third area outlined by Chamber Board Chairman Mark Bowen is energy, which during presentations focused on Idaho Power’s ability to produce electricity and Intermountain Gas’s ability to produce and deliver natural gas at a reasonable rate.

All of the breakout sections’ result will be compiled and delivered at a Tuesday morning meeting.

  1. Since Boise the place to be, why are you spending your dollars in Sun Valley

  2. Boise has excellent quality of life (at least while the jobs hold out)...but this is the EASY stuff. Lots of places have "good quality of life", and they're far more competitive than Boise.

It's the HARD things that now count; what are you doing about that stuff?

  3. So, the issues are energy and transportation infrastructure. Wow. Two major, major investment items that will take years to decades to resolve. That sucks. It would be nice to be short on something that takes 3-5 years to fix, not 10-20.
