- Steve Martinez, president of the Idaho Building Contractors Association, is quoted today as saying that “residential building has hit bottom, and we’re on the ascent.”
This
comment comes as the state economist reported a 79 percent drop in state tax revenue, largely due to Idaho’s housing industry. Martinez said, “Permits are going back up, the phone is ringing again. For months, it’s been remodel orders, but now we are seeing clients. It’s a little slower than the usual early-spring rush, but not much.”
- Republican Sen. Larry Craig has sponsored 25 Idaho higher education bills, and has contributed to the record setting $2.25 billion approved for institutions nationally, according to the Chronicle of Higher Education. Idaho colleges and universities are expected to get more than $20 million from Congressional money. Craig serves on the Senate Appropriations Committee.
- NewWest.com reporter Jill Kuraitis in Boise reported on the 30-5 supermajority needed vote by the Senate to override the governor’s veto of drug rehabilitation monies.
Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter vetoed line-items in two Senate bills last week which provide $16.8 million in funding for substance abuse treatment programs in the state. The override applies to
