  • Slumping orders in a slumping economy are being blamed for layoffs at a Fruitland millworks.
Woodgrain Millworks laid off 20 of its 1,000 workers two weeks ago after a corporatewide mandate ordered cuts to its workforce by 2 percent nationwide, according to the Argus Observer. Woodgrain Public Relations Representative Brooks Dame said the layoffs are a direct result of the national housing slump.

  • Pipeline developer El Paso Holding Company may be looking a little farther north in laying out a 680-mile, 42-inch diameter natural gas pipeline from Wyoming to Oregon.
According to the Salt Lake Tribune, work is under way on the development, but final hearings have the developer looking at an alternate route. Planning surveys and meeting on the $2 billion pipeline with land owners in Wyoming, Idaho, Utah, Nevada and Oregon could alter the route through Montpelier, Idaho, and Tremonton rather than through Woodruff in the Bear Lake area and through Avon and Paradise in Cache Valley. A final public comment hearing was held in Logan last week.

  • Hot spot Trudy’s Kitchen in Idaho City was destroyed by fire earlier this week. The restaurant broke out forcing the closure just as the summer tourist season was about to begin, according to KTVB in Boise.
