Rep. Bill Sali spoke about his views on reforming Congress, explained some of his controversial votes and previewed immigration reform legislation he plans to introduce in Congress at BizNet, a business leads and networking group, this morning. Here are a few highlights:

  • “I think the Republican Party has lost track. We were in the majority and we spent money like drunken sailors and ran into ethical problems…. Republicans have a very deep-seated problem … people believe Democrats will spend less than the Republicans.”
  • On Sen. Larry Craig: “He has steadfastly denied that he did anything wrong. There are some weird things that happened there. [If he was gay all this time] wouldn’t you expect there’s a long line of people saying, ‘I was one of them’? Are you really going to believe the Idaho Statesman?”
  • “If you’re worried about global warming, the single best thing we can do is protect forest health to prevent these big wildfires. [Wildfires in three states in the last year] caused as much carbon dioxide as any manmade source. We’re straining at gnats.”
  • “There’s already 17 different agencies that were managing over 200 different programs to increase interest in teaching science, technology, math and engineering. Is it a bad idea to do that? No. But it’s not working now. We need to do things differently. It’s really easy to say if we give another program to these guys and another program to these guys it’ll get things done…. Just throwing money at the problem is not a real solution.”

  1. It seems that both parties are moving left. The Republicans look like Democrats and the Democrats look like Socialists.

    Good day to you Comrade.

  2. This is why I voted for Bill. As long as he sticks to his guns, stays true to REAL party lines, and doesn't allow DC politicking to ruin him, he'll continue to earn my vote.

  3. "We were in the majority and we spent money like drunken sailors and ran into ethical problems…. If Republicans hadn't had not been stolen the presidency and been elected the majority, we would not have started a unjust war in iraq and put ourself into this trillion dollar mess.

  4. "[If he was gay all this time] wouldn’t you expect there’s a long line of people saying, ‘I was one of them’?" Ooooooops.

Yes, in fact you would expect that and that's just what happened. In Sunday's ID Statesman, five men came forth and said they'd been sexually active with Craig. And there are certainly many more. And the more Craig continues to deny his homosexuality and demonize gays, the more Johns will come out of the woodwork.

If Bill Sali is in such deep denial over Craig, how can he be considered credible on anything? Honestly, how can anyone stare in the face of such overwhelming evidence and still parrot Craig's lies? Sali, Crapo, and Simpson have got their heads in the sand on this issue, just like the occupation of Iraq and the corruption and incompetence of the Bush administration.
